If your pup eats its food too fast, don’t worry, you’re not the only one. Many puppies do. It is shared across all dog breeds.

Why do puppies eat fast?

Eating fast is often a learned trait that puppies pick up when they’re babies, especially from a big litter. They get excited to eat, see the food, and rush to the dish. Some puppies will quickly get over that conduct, but others will keep at it until they are taught to slow down. Another reason a puppy may eat fast is if they have health issues such as parasites which are very common in puppies. Parasites will cause a puppy’s food not to digest correctly, making them more hungry than usual. If you suspect your puppy may have parasites, you should drop off a fecal sample to your pet doctor or make an appointment for a dog medical aid. Another reason your puppy may be eating too fast is if they’re not getting the nutrition they need due to a poor diet.

Why is it wrong for a pup to eat food fast?

Several reasons can be wrong for a puppy to woof down its food in seconds. First, it can be a choking hazard – If puppies are eating their food too fast, they’re not chewing it enough, which may get lodged in their throat. Second, it can cause them to vomit. Third, it can lead to a life-threatening and severe condition called gastric dilatation-volvulus or dog bloat. A dog eating fast can get hiccups. This is when the stomach bloats up with air and twists. This condition is an emergency because a pup can quickly enter shock and may require quick dog medical aid. Having veterinary insurance for these emergencies helps treat your dog better.

How fast is too fast for a pup to eat?

How fast is too fast for a dog to eat will depend on the size of the dog and the quantity of food they intake. If a large breed like a Husky can finish two cups of food in a minute or less, that’s too quick. On the other hand, if a small breed can complete half a cup of food in less than 45 seconds, that’s very fast. If you can’t see or hear your puppy chewing, they’re probably eating too fast. But, of course, you should always speak with your veterinarian if you have any concerns or questions about your dog’s eating habits. But think about how you would sense when you inhale your dinner or lunch too fast. You feel bloated and not too hot. That’s how your puppy will think after inhaling its bread.

How to make your puppy eat slower

There are several methods to help your dog slow down their fast eating.

Slow feeder bowl

Like anything, slow-feeder dog bowls have pros and cons. There are various slow feeders available online and in pet stores. Choose the one that fits your canine’s size and if purchasing online, make sure to read the reviews of other pet parents.

Food puzzles

Food puzzles come in many different sizes and shapes, and they are an excellent option for puppies that eat their food too fast. Puzzle feeders are similar to slow feeders. They usually have different crannies and nooks for your dog’s food to fit into, which makes it almost impossible for your dog to gulp down their food in seconds.

Stuffable dog toys

Dog toys you can fill, such as the Kong and Toppl, are also a great option.

It would help if you preferred the Toppl because it has a wider opening at the top, making it easier for giant breed dogs to clean. Toppl’s are also easier to portion food, so if you nourish kibble and wet food or feed a raw diet, it’s easy!

Most dogs, in due course, will grow out of this period, but some will always be fast eaters, so switching things up is always great to keep them eating their food safely.
